Smalltalk-72 included a programming environment and was dynamically typed, and at first was interpreted, not compiled. In the 1970s, the first version of the Smalltalk programming language was developed at Xerox PARC by Alan Kay, Dan Ingalls and Adele Goldberg. A 1976 MIT memo co-authored by Barbara Liskov lists Simula 67, CLU, and Alphard as object-oriented languages, but does not mention Smalltalk. Although sometimes called "the father of object-oriented programming", Alan Kay has differentiated his notion of OO from the more conventional abstract data type notion of object, and has implied that the computer science establishment did not adopt his notion. Kay used the term "object-oriented programming" in conversation as early as 1967. Influenced by the work at MIT and the Simula language, in November 1966 Alan Kay began working on ideas that would eventually be incorporated into the Smalltalk programming language. I thought of objects being like biological cells and/or individual computers on a network, only able to communicate with messages (so messaging came at the very beginning – it took a while to see how to do messaging in a programming language efficiently enough to be useful). The object-oriented Simula programming language was used mainly by researchers involved with physical modelling, such as models to study and improve the movement of ships and their content through cargo ports. Simula introduced important concepts that are today an essential part of object-oriented programming, such as class and object, inheritance, and dynamic binding. Independently of later MIT work such as AED, Simula was developed during the years 1961–1967. Topics such as data abstraction and modular programming were common points of discussion at this time. Also, in 1968, an MIT ALGOL version, AED-0, established a direct link between data structures ("plexes", in that dialect) and procedures, prefiguring what were later termed "messages", "methods", and "member functions". Another early MIT example was Sketchpad created by Ivan Sutherland in 1960–1961 in the glossary of the 1963 technical report based on his dissertation about Sketchpad, Sutherland defined notions of "object" and "instance" (with the class concept covered by "master" or "definition"), albeit specialized to graphical interaction. "Object" referred to LISP atoms with identified properties (attributes). Terminology invoking "objects" in the modern sense of object-oriented programming made its first appearance at the artificial intelligence group at MIT in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Significant object-oriented languages include Ada, ActionScript, C++, Common Lisp, C#, Dart, Eiffel, Fortran 2003, Haxe, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Logo, MATLAB, Objective-C, Object Pascal, Perl, PHP, Python, R, Raku, Ruby, Scala, SIMSCRIPT, Simula, Smalltalk, Swift, Vala and Visual Basic.NET. Many of the most widely used programming languages (such as C++, Java, Python, etc.) are multi-paradigm and they support object-oriented programming to a greater or lesser degree, typically in combination with imperative programming, procedural programming and functional programming. In OOP, computer programs are designed by making them out of objects that interact with one another. Object-oriented programming ( OOP) is a programming paradigm based on the concept of objects, which can contain data and code: data in the form of fields (often known as attributes or properties), and code in the form of procedures (often known as methods). Through inheritance, a subclass can be created as a subset of the Button class. This Button class has variables for data, and functions. For other meanings of object-oriented, see Object-orientation.

In the last thirty years, China has undergone the largest process of urbanisation in history. A classic example is the northeastern seaboard of the USA, a megalopolis as Gottman termed it, stretching hundreds of miles from Washington through New York City to Boston, with around 50m people. In the early 20th century, geographers observed how rail and road networks were allowing rapidly growing cities to fuse together into vast sprawling conurbations. This is the world's largest agricultural region, supporting a population of around 450 million people in India and 120 million in Bangladesh. This is particularly the case along the Ganges plain in northern India, stretching nearly 2000km from just east of Delhi to Dhaka in Bangladesh. If we zoom in on India (click on links to focus the map), we can see the complexity of rural, peri-urban and urban landscapes, with thousands and thousands of villages, towns and cities in an intricate hierarchy. While India has many of the world's largest cities, it retains a huge rural population of around 900 million people. Both countries have a population of 1.4 billion, with India set to move ahead of China and reach 1.5 billion by 2030. India: the World's Most Populous CountryĪt the global scale, the world population density map highlights the immense concentration of humanity in India and China. Some introductory highlights from the data are discussed below with links for further information. This website has received 500,000 visitors since 2020, illustrating the widespread interest in global population geography. The GHSL records the complexity and diversity of human settlement, beyond simple rural-urban divisions. Integrating huge volumes of satellite data with national census data, the GHSL describes in detail the settlement geography of the entire globe, and has applications for a wide range of research and policy related to urban growth, development and sustainability. The data is from the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) 2023 produced by the European Commission JRC and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network at Columbia University. This interactive map shows population density in 2020, measured in residents per square kilometre. Visualising Population Density Across the Globe Recent latin american Blizzard dubs have been. Something I really appreciate from this game is the dub. It really can't cater to new players without sacrificing its own integrity anyway. It's still hard as hell like it was back when it first came out. It'll get people back into the game, but it doesn't really do much to invite new players. I think the game is just a treat for loyal fans who are still into the game. Which were both shooters and interestingly enough are now pretty much in competitive obscurity as well. It only really had market competition from two games too, which were Halo and Call of Duty. A lot of players did come from StarCraft 1, but just as many were WarCraft 3 players, Command and Conquer players, etc. StarCraft 2 was successful (when it was) because it killed off every other strategy game and those players changed over. Especially because outside of Korea, competitive StarCraft was never really that popular anyway. But while I think StarCraft will become big again in Korea, worldwide, I don't think it'll even surpass StarCraft 2's popularity, much less become the most popular esport again. I'm happy to see Day9 making videos about it and other players making some ladder videos. MaNa's channel since he has never been the type to put out content before: Ĭlick to expand. This is nice to see. Hotkey customization was an unexpected move to me, but hey I'll take it. This ladder and matchmaking system are the only real things the game needed mechanically. The new ladder system definitely outclasses the old servers and I hope they continue to improve upon it. These two alone likely brought over a large chunk of the SC 2 playerbase and even though this looks very temporary, it is still neat to see. PiG and MaNa (other SC 2 players too) have been streaming it with MaNa finally using his Youtube channel to upload vods of his progress in BW and PiG has also been uploading his vods because that is what he does. The biggest deal about this release is the attention it is bringing the game from people who play other Blizzard games with a rather large audience from SC 2 finally taking a long hard look at it for awhile. I finally wget to see what the artists had in mind when creating the Defiler, Ultralisk, and Hydralisk overworld faces too. Out of all the cosmetic changes, I think the CC/Hatch-Hive/Nexus preorder skins were the best of the bunch (the Hive and Nexus look amazing). But there's an intro video already that kinda just covers what exactly the game is.Ĭampaign-wise, I like all of the new story text backdrops althought the new portraits aren't quite what I had pictured because of the way they had to animate them. From what I hear, he will start it when he's finished with TI for Dota. If it's been a while and you need to catch up, I heard that Day9 is doing a series about the game that should be helpful. I always found the community quite toxic and self-destructive (which was probably a contributing factor to its current significant decline, not to be too presumptuous) so I would really be interested in finding people to play with here, if there are people still around. I was really active in the StarCraft 2 community back when I played it was actually my main community before switching to Smogon and Pokemon (there was a 2 month period where I considered Yu-Gi-Oh but nah). I'm really excited to be playing the game with other people at a point where I actually know how to play the game. With that in mind, what I'm most looking forward to in this release is the act that it will have modern multiplayer support. It's still as fun as I remember at the risk of sounding like a genwunner or Melee guy, I do find it to still be the slightly superior game, in terms of competitive mechanics. Last year, I re-bought StarCraft 1 and finally went through both the original and Brood War campaigns without cheats. When StarCraft 2 came out, I was in high school, so I learned to play for real and developed actual technique with the mechanics. I've been a lifelong fan of StarCraft I played the original as a kid and always used cheats or played gimmick maps and such. As I understand it, it's the same mechanics, but with updated graphics and fitted for more modern screen resolutions. StarCraft Remastered is being released later this month. This might be a long shot, but who knows. Potions provide healing, protection and other benefits, or can be made into weapons to throw at your enemies. Sonic crudity for its own sake is never a selling point for me. And…I’m enjoying the results more than I thought I would. (N.B.: Sepultura never broke up they’re currently led by guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Jr., and have released some good albums, but I never listen to them.) And now they’ve gone all the way into Taylor Swift territory, and re-recorded the band’s earliest releases, the Bestial Devastation EP (originally a split with the mostly forgotten Overdose) and Morbid Visions. In recent years, the Cavalera brothers have been touring and playing Sepultura songs, in an act of overt nostalgic fan service. He’s also put together some interesting side projects like the arty Killer Be Killed (with members of Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon and Converge) and the crushing, primitive Go Ahead And Die, with his son Igor Amadeus Cavalera. Max signed with Nuclear Blast and has put out four albums - 2013’s Savages, 2015’s Archangel, 2018’s Ritual, and 2022’s Totem - which are among the most ferocious material he’s ever recorded. Soulfly, too, seemed to get heavier and angrier with every record. While their sound evolved somewhat from album to album, it was always crude, punishing and heavy as fuck. ( I interviewed Max when it came out.) Their fourth release, 2017’s Psychosis, featured multiple guests, including Justin Broadrick of Godflesh and Dominick Fernow of Prurient and Vatican Shadow. On the third Cavalera Conspiracy album, 2014’s Pandemonium (released on Napalm), Converge’s Nate Newton played bass. On 2011’s Blunt Force Trauma, they were even harder and more punk Duplantier was gone, replaced by Johny Chow, formerly of Fireball Ministry. Inflikted was a crude, noisy blast of hardcore thrash, with Soulfly’s Marc Rizzo on guitar and Gojira’s Joe Duplantier on bass. Their debut album, Inflikted, came out in 2008, while I was editor of Metal Edge magazine I put Max and Iggor on the cover dressed in black suits and sunglasses like the Blues Brothers. The group I really liked at that point was Cavalera Conspiracy, which Max and his brother Iggor (who had stayed with Sepultura when Max left, causing a decade-long rift between the brothers) formed in 2006, after reuniting at a memorial concert for Max’s son. It was pretty good, but it was also their final release for the label. They had abandoned most of the tribal and world-music aspects of their sound in favor of grimy thrash, and released one album, Enslaved, while I was there. I came around on Soulfly when I worked for their label, Roadrunner Records, between 20. The Slayer fans weren’t into it, and honestly neither was I. Almost a decade later, in August 2002, I saw Cavalera again, opening for Slayer at NYC’s Roseland with his post- Sepultura group, the tribal nü-metal act Soulfly. I saw Sepultura in 1993 or maybe 1994 at the Newark, NJ shithole Studio One they were touring in support of their then-new album Chaos A.D., with openers Clutch, Fear Factory, and Fudge Tunnel (the band I was really there to see). I’ve been a fan of Max Cavalera’s music for 30 years, off and on. Even better, if you have two hoppers facing into each other, then you can double the output length by waiting for the items to leave the second hopper after first waiting for them to leave the first hopper. A hopper takes 4 redstone ticks to move an item, and you can have up to 5 stacks (320 items) in a hopper. So most long-duration timer circuits will use hoppers and comparators for timing. That's much smaller than 150!īut 20 fader circuits is still quite a bit. So you could chain 20 of those together to get your 600 tick delay. The slowest 2-comparator pulse extender (that is, two comparators next to each other, facing opposite directions, with redstone dust on their 4 inputs and outputs) will last 3 seconds, or 30 redstone ticks. A repeater can create a delay of up to 4 ticks, so you'd need 600 / 4 = 150 repeaters if you wanted to do it the simple, cheap, and naive way.ġ50 is a lot, so I'd recommend you use a different method. So 60 * 10 = 600 ticks of delay is what you need. 1 minute is 60 seconds, and 1 second is 10 redstone ticks (which, confusingly, are each 2 game ticks long, but that's not really relevant to this thread).
